Weird Science

What do you do if you have a caterpillar and he makes a chrysalis and never emerges? (remember Cheeky?)

Well if you're a 5 year old boy, you dissect it with a sewing needle of course!

Behold, Mummy Moth!

He's now resting comfortably in our nature table and a proper sarcophagus is forthcoming.

  1. dissection with a sewing needle...that's a new one on me. :) I'm glad Zach was able to discover what happened to his caterpillar.

  2. How great that you live on a boat! What a wonderful experience for your children in this day and age.

  3. He's budding into a little scientist!

Does he have a sketch pad so he can sketch his little findings on them? He would probably come up with some neat things on your nature walks

  4. looks like a very curious boy. i never did the caterpillar thing, but we did tadpoles and got them to frog stage.

Looks like it is time for a proper burial at sea!

  5. Oh i do remember Cheeky! His desirability as a pet was greatly admired! What a shame he came to naught. Yes, a worthy sarcophagus is in order. Perhaps you could wrap him in a flag and give him a sea burial - but would he have to put a stitch through his nose first?

  6. Great idea. We had some caterpillars turn into moths, and a few didn't emerge. I still have the container. Maybe tomorrow we'll see what's in them.
