But apparently that's not what happened. "Mom, Totoro! Totoro was here, on OUR boat! And he made my acorns sprout! TOTORO!!!!!!!!!!!"
If you or your little ones in your life have never seen the movie My Neighbor Totoro... see it. Even for our family with no tv and very selective movies... Totoro has a place of honor on our boat and in our hearts.
And now in a jar, out in the cockpit our little oak garden is doing its thing. Nature. Magic. Or a little bit of both.
So to our seagoing Totoro I say, "please continue to look after us."
(one guess where these guys came from... yup, MamaRoots)

What a beautiful post and how neat that your acorns sprouted.
Wow! You live on a sailboat - I am so very impressed and look forward to reading more of your family's adventures. Our family, of eight, lived for 2 years off grid in a small mobile home and I thought that was small:)
Warm wishes.
That's so adorable and enchanting! I definately believe in magic, and so my answer to "Was it magic?" would be a resounding "Yes!". Love it!
Neat! We've never seen this Totoro movie, I will have to check it out.
When I first started reading this post, I thought you were going to say that you had the same acorn problem we did... A few weeks ago we collected a 2-gallon bag full. My husband wanted to try making acorn flour (?!). The bag of acorns sat in our laundry room for 2 days before I walked in there and saw tiny little maggot-looking slugs crawling ALL OVER! Sure enough, there were tiny little holes in the acorns where they came from. YUCK!
so neat they sprouted! and better what I thought you were going to say... that worms had come out!
I will have to netflix this movie
We haven't seen that movie either, but I just added it to our netflix queue. It looks like mamaroots is cropping up all over the blogosphere today. :)
Adding Totoro to our Netflix que. I may have to try sprouting acorns with The Little. What a lovely post!
Best movie ever made. Ever. HOW FUN to have Totoro visit your boat! weeee
Oh my goodness! Totoro is our favorite kids movie and my son sleeps with a stuffed Totoro that we bought while living in Japan. Those figures are the cutest ever! I must get my hands on them!
I keep finding we have more in common : ) We are tv-less too! Lovely to see such magic happening on your boat!!
