I love the different shades. You can twist it around while you scribble and get all kinds of cool strokes of color.
I predict we'll have to make a bunch more for our little friends on Valentine's day.

melting rainbows
Melting crayons to make new crayons is a common crafty mama thing. But we never tried it before until this week. I got two 50-pack crayons from the dollar store and let Zach sort them roughly by color.
The we broke them up and plopped them into a silicone heart shape mold (same one we use for beeswax as seen here). I was told doing same-ish colors rather than rainbow crayons helps prevent the colors from muddying each other into one big pool of brown.
I set the tempermental boat oven on a low temp, placed the mold on a baking sheet in case of spilling, and set the timer 10 minutes at a time and kept checking them until they looked just melted. Then I carefully set them outside in the cold for a short while and they set up quickly.

We've make these many times. Peeling the crayons is the worst part, especially if you use the crayola brand which glues their labels on really well. Some brands of crayons are really waxy and don't work as well, we've found. Thanks for sharing. Reminds me that we need to do this again soon!
These are so cute! I imagine that big chunky shapes will be easier to hold than a slender crayon for little ones. I'm keeping this in mind ( though those Kitty Egg ones sure were cute!)

Love this idea! I've been wanting to do this with my girls but haven't made it to Ikea to get those silicone molds yet.
This reminds me of a project i did as a kid where you heated up a rock in the oven and then (carefully) drew on the rock with crayons. The crayon melted all over and made really pretty designs. I am sure their are tutorials online somewhere. I will keep an eye out for a good one.

This is awesome! I would totally craft this with Gabrielle but really, at 8 weeks old, it's me that would be the one coloring at the end of the day, pinning my drawings up on our "fridge."
We tested out this craft tonight and it was fun. Alex enjoyed sorting the colors, making her own color combinations, & watching the crayons transform in the oven. I can see that this heart mold is going to get a lot of baking and crafting mileage!
Thanks for helping me to keep creativity going all week long (Seriously. Stop laughing at me. No I'm not drinking). And anyway, I love keeping Alex busy at night with learning activities.
