Bahh-Bye... for now

It's been a fabulous year of fiber farm goodness for Zach and me (winterspring, & summer). And this month was our last visit to the farm where we got a big bag of roving and hand spun yarn from our sheep... plus a little lesson in weaving for the kids.
More than anything this time around Zach just wanted to roam the farm and take in one last afternoon with the animals.
I was loving roaming the property and taking in the details of this beautiful place in the late fall light...
Considering I don't know how to knit, and considering the long drive for us to get here, and considering all of the activities we have to pick and choose from for homeschooling fun... I figured we were finished with the fiber farm. But oh no, the boy stopped Miss Lisa on the way out and said, "Can we come back and do the class again next year, please?!"
Now I really need some knitting lessons!

Aww...I'm so glad he enjoyed it so much. I'd want to return again the next year too! I'm sure you'll figure out something to do with all that roving and yarn. ;)

Two words for you: Loom Knitting.

It is super easy, and super fast. You start out making hats pretty exclusively...but there are free patterns on the net for making other things (I'm finishing up a Christmas stocking right now). Seriously, SO. EASY. I use the Provo Craft Knifty Knitters but I've seen beautiful wood looms online. The small looms nest inside the larger ones so they don't take up too much space (important on a boat, no?).

PS: Zach could totally do loom knitting himself.

I found that knitting books aimed at children are easier for me to learn from. The illustrate things quite clearly (good for a visual learner like me!) "Kids Knitting" by Melanie Falnick is my favourite. Goes all the way from making knitting needles and dying yarn to knitting from patterns!

(A tip on needles though- if you are finding that you drop stitches wooden/bamboo needles are great. But if you are like me you may find metal ones smoother and less annoying to work with. So if you are frustrated with one kind try another it can make a big difference.)

I absolutely LOVE the picture of the chair. You should get a calendar printed with your photos and sell them on your blog to fill the cruising kitty. Wish I was there- I'd love to teach you to knit.

What beautiful photos you take. My children were enjoying weaving today. I'm not sure where you are located on your boat but it's beautiful. My husbands dream was to buy a catamaran and sail but I get sea sick so we bought a farm instead. Maybe someday!
