Six Strings & Ten Little Fingers

A fabulous gift from one of my big brothers.

I am a big believer in kids needing music in their lives. Listening to it, dancing around, and making it. Z is now past the shaker egg and triangle stage, but not quite old enough for anything formal in the music realm. So the arrival of this small scale but beautifully made guitar was perfect timing. He spends time practically everyday getting a feel for it, practicing strumming, listening to the sounds he can make.

My favorite is when he comes to me and declares, "Mom, I wrote a song, do you want to hear it?" And he strums and drums the side of the guitar and strums some more. He makes up silly lyrics. He titles the songs things like "First Day Of Fall" or "I Love Popcorn". And some evenings he walks around with his guitar (I desperately need to get him a strap!) and enlists the help of our neighbors. They happily oblige with a jam session.

I have to confess to a weird little thing. Every since I was pregnant I had this image or fantasty or what have you, about having a son who would play guitar for me. So seeing him strum away is just nirvana for this mama, even if it's all musical scribbles at this stage. All I can say is, Eric Clapton, look out!

Those pictures really do say it all..I love the music our little ones create, especially at the ages when they "jam" to beats all their own. Noah is getting to the age where he's wanting lessons (cello, piano, guitar) and while that's great, I still love the days when he and Max (and now Lizzie, with her shaker!) plunk down and rock out!

MameFati -- The guitar was a gift from my brother to my son. But the brand is Amigo and they sell 1/2 size and 3/4 size guitars for children. I believe this is a 1/2 size one. It's really beautiful, not like a plastic kids guitar.
